The Commuter Chronicles

Let’s get personal.  Charm City Love Inc. members have become one with the organization’s mission and goals.  We live and thrive by hearing and telling the stories in the city.  I, Stacia Griner, had the opportunity to spread the love in the Washington, DC area during my commute to work through Union Station.

Follow me for a second.  I’m usually at work at 7:30 AM but my train was delayed and I was about two hours late for work.  As I walked toward the metro, a homeless family approached me.  As much as I care for the underserved and less fortunate, I’m always reluctant to hand over cash…and usually when I’m approached in Union Station that’s what people ask for.

The first thing said to me was “We don’t want your money.”  The family of two then explained to me that their shelter will not serve another meal until 7:00 PM and they were hungry and asked if I could help with a meal.  I was late to work but realized some things take precedence.  I told the family to choose the restaurant where they wanted to eat.  They chose Johnny Rocket’s, ordered their food, I paid for their breakfast, and they sat at the table and ate together.

Prior to my departure, the woman asked if I had any personal hygiene products and luckily I did.  I gave her all I had.  They were so thankful and I learned a part of their story during our five minutes together.  Here’s what I learned:

  •  They have been homeless since 2008
  • They feel misunderstood and mistreated because the shelters ask them why they won’t live with family.  They told me if they had any family they would be with them.
  • The shelters aren’t easy to get in to and you can’t eat whenever you want to.
  • Personal hygiene products are important for them but they can’t always afford them.

Leaving the family hungry was not an option for me.  The family told me they were ready to give up and fe el this way often.  Who knew such a small gesture could help someone so much and restore their faith in humanity?

As soon as I got to work I told our Executive Board about my encounter and knew that the mission of our organization is one that I carry proudly and act on in my everyday life.  I encourage us all to help someone less fortunate than ourselves.  You never know the impact you can have on someone’s life.
